Almost but not quite and certainly not if you are using them to cut framing pieces all day long. Joe has both a wormdrive and a regular circular saw. He pulls out his Skil HD77M wormdrive circular saw when he needs to get through the big stuff. But when he will be cutting 2x4s all day he uses the lighter weight DeWalt 368K. And for cutting up on the roof he uses his DeWalt cordless DC300K with a NANO battery. Joe said he got into the NANO technology because it gets damn cold in Buffalo and he wants the reliability of Lithium Ion batteries which will perform just as well in cold temperatures. And the nicest thing about them is that the DeWalt NANO batteries are backwards compatible with all his DeWalt cordless tools. Hmmm. But what kind of circular saw do I want? While I am not a contractor I am an avid Do-It-Yourselfer who has a sweet job as the editor of a tool blog. Yup I get a great discount on the high quality tools that are sold at the Toolking Superstore and you betcha Ive been taking advantage of that! (shameless plug ;0) Seriously though even if I didnt get the discount ToolKing has the lowest prices especially if you go for the reconditioned versions (believe me Ive checked around).
However they lack power. The blades tend to be smaller and therefore they do not cut as quick. Since it takes a lot of power to cut through wood you will definitely need more than one battery as you will be recharging them often. Corded Saws - Corded saws are more powerful but also heavier. If you are going to be cutting a lot of wood grab the corded model as it will save you aggravation down the road. I currently own a cordless and corded one. I find myself using both models just about the same. It is just easier to grab the cordless one and start cutting. Most of the carpenters I know or have talked to also own both styles. There are various types of circular saw available on the market today. Generally these saws are classified on the basis of their circular blades. This type of saw has metal disc having saw teeth and blade spinning around which helps to make accurate cuts. Following are the different types of circular saws available on the market: 1. Miter saw: This one is especially used to make small cuts at different angles. With this say circular blades come down on a wooden piece placed at an angle. You can use miter saw if you want to do molding around your house to make picture frames and for all other cuts which require special attention. 2. Radial saw: This one has sliding arm placed horizontally which allows users to move through wood cuts.

A worm-drive saw runs at lower RPMs than sidewinder circular saws. This produces more torque at the cutting surface and reduces the likelihood of the saw bogging down. A worm-drive is the choice when cutting thick pieces of lumber 2x4s and 2x6s or wet material. Worm-drive saws are slightly heavier than sidewinder saws 12 to 15 pounds but after a little use you get used to the weight and learn to appreciate the more solid feel of a worm-drive saw. Plunge type saws have metal guide rails that make them useful for trimming. The saw makes its cut very close to the rail without actually touching it. A lot of plunge saws are constructed to hold the material being cut eliminating the need for clamps. However if youre like me I still prefer to use clamps; it just gives me a more firm and solid feeling when making the cut especially when I need at least a reasonable level of accuracy. Plunge-type circular saws are specially designed to make a cut in the middle of large sheets of wood. The most popular circular saw for general use is the 7 inch saw. It doesnt cost much: ranging from $80 up to around $200. Its also relatively light usually 10 to 12 pounds. Some models are just basic with few features while others can have dual-beam laser guide lines. These saws typically come with sidewinder type motors. They operate at higher RPMs compared to worm-drive saws and produce less torque. While some circular saw manufacturers offer frills such as canvas carrying bags or LED lights there are several features that you absolutely need if youre going to enjoy using your saw. Im not saying that canvas bags and LED lights arent nice features to have but there are others that are more important.
